514. Elmer Henry "Bud" (changed to Robert Elmer)8 VAN GUNDY (Robert Elmer7 VAN GUNDY, Daniel William6, John5, David Jr4, David Sr3, Peter Sr2, Male1) was born in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL December 17, 1914.

He married Gladys HARTMAN in Cedar Rapids, IA, Christian parsonage, September 5, 1937. Gladys was born in Parkersburg, IA May 4, 1916. At 23 years of age Gladys became the mother of Jerry Lee VAN GUNDY in Cedar Rapids, IA, January 20, 1940. At 31 years of age Gladys became the mother of Mitzi Kay VAN GUNDY in Jefferson City, MO, July 6, 1947.

At 25 years of age Elmer became the father of Jerry Lee VAN GUNDY in Cedar Rapids, IA, January 20, 1940. At 32 years of age Elmer became the father of Mitzi Kay VAN GUNDY in Jefferson City, MO, July 6, 1947. He changed his name when he reached adulthood, stating that his mother originally intended to name him after his father but his Van Gundy grandparents wanted him to carry the name of their son, Elmer, and they prevailed. He signed the Powell family reunion roster in 1940 as RE Van Gundy, Jr. During his adolescence he was known as "Henry." Residences & events: Kansas City, MO. Upon high school graduation he worked as a laborer with a contracting company, earning $0.25/hour while computing daily charges by the company. He quit to begin work as an insurance adjuster for an underwriter's adjustment company and was transferred to Chicago. However, he did not want to live in Chicago so he switched companies which assigned him to the KS, NE, and IA area. 1936 Cedar Rapids, IA, where his office was eventually located. While there he took flying lessons which would later facilitate his becoming a pilot in the service of his county. 1940 Topeka, KS, where he was transferred, still as an insurance adjuster. 3/2/1943 Grand Isle, LA. Bud was called to active duty as a pilot for submarine patrol in coastal waters. Following this stint of duty, he was given the choice of returning home or reenlisting in the regular Air Force, he chose the latter. 2/1944 He was inducted into the Air Force, rising to Lt. Col, the rank he held until retirement on 12/17/1976. Jefferson City, MO, was the office to which the insurance adjusting company reassigned him following the war. 1947 St Cloud, MN. He was again transferred and during this time also began to dabble in other occupations as well, such as owning a service station, being a partner in a construcion company, owning part interest in a salvage company, and owner of several properties. He eventually opened his own adjusting company which he sold within a few years but still continued to work as an adjuster, traveling throughout the country to disaster areas. 1967 Winter Haven, FL. He bought the Dairy Queen franchise and, among the family, operated several stores. At age 75 he decided to retire and disposed of any interests which involved work. He now passes the time by fishing, travelling and visiting with friends.
