362. Daniel William6 VAN GUNDY (John5, David Jr4, David Sr3, Peter Sr2, Male1) was born in Scott Co, IL February 3, 1859. Daniel died March 8, 1941 in Mattoon, Coles Co, IL, at 82 years of age. His body was interred in Greenhill Cem, Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL.

He married Laura Belle NEAVES in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL, March 4, 1885. Laura was born in Brooksville, Bracken Co, Ky February 22, 1866. Laura died December 28, 1931 in Moultrie Co, IL, at home, at 65 years of age. Her body was interred December 31, 1931 in Greenhill Cem, Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL. At 20 years of age Laura became the mother of Stella VAN GUNDY in Macon Co, IL, March 16, 1886. At 21 years of age Laura became the mother of Robert Elmer VAN GUNDY in Milam Twp, Macon Co, IL, April 25, 1887. At 23 years of age Laura became the mother of Carrie Ivy VAN GUNDY November 20, 1889. At 24 years of age Laura became the mother of John Nimrod VAN GUNDY in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL, February 8, 1891. At 30 years of age Laura became the mother of W J Bryan VAN GUNDY in Moultrie Co, IL, November 8, 1896. At 32 years of age Laura became the mother of Dewey Schley VAN GUNDY in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL, September 1, 1898. She was from the hills of KY and was proud of it. She never liked to wear shoes or dress for guests and when important men came to call on her husband, she usually disappeared rather than play hostess. The story is told that when DW built the new house, the first in Moultrie County with indoor plumbing, Laura made him build a new outhouse, too. She refused to let anyone use a commode under the same roof where she cooked. Grandchildren told of spending summers there working on the farm but they always had to take showers in the basement, via the outside basement door, before coming into the house itself and they were never allowed in the front part of the house unless they crawled across the carpets. Laura Belle was a wealthy woman in her own right, owning several pieces of property soley in her name: 1/25/1893 Moultrie Co, IL. Her parents transferred some property at E 1/2 SE S21 T14 R5 to her for $1 by warranty deed. 1900 Sullivan Twp, Moultrie Co, IL. She inherited 80 acres of the old homestead at S3 T13 R5, along with $4400 in cash and securities, including the note of A.B. Patterson. 2/28/1901 She bought land from Isaac and Kate E Hudson by warranty deed for $9000. The land was situated at S 1/2 SE & NE SE S28 T14 R5. 8/13/1904 She bought land from brother, Robert, located at W 1/2 SW S12 T14 R5 for $1000 by warranty deed. 2/27/1906 Cyrus and Caroline Arnold sold their land at E 1/2 NW S9 T13 R5, to Laura for $400 by warranty deed. 9/14/1906 Brother, Robert, transferred more land with the same coordinates to her by quit claim deed for $1. 9/20/1906 On this date she received another plot at the same location from Flora A Hardy, also by quit claim deed, also for $1. 3/28/1911 Property she owned jointly with her husband was transferred to her name soley by warranty deed, no money exchanging hands. The plot was located at SW S22 T14 R5.

At 27 years of age Daniel became the father of Stella VAN GUNDY in Macon Co, IL, March 16, 1886. At 28 years of age Daniel became the father of Robert Elmer VAN GUNDY in Milam Twp, Macon Co, IL, April 25, 1887. At 30 years of age Daniel became the father of Carrie Ivy VAN GUNDY November 20, 1889. At 32 years of age Daniel became the father of John Nimrod VAN GUNDY in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL, February 8, 1891. At 37 years of age Daniel became the father of W J Bryan VAN GUNDY in Moultrie Co, IL, November 8, 1896. At 39 years of age Daniel became the father of Dewey Schley VAN GUNDY in Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL, September 1, 1898. DW carried our ancestral lineage down one more generation. Residences & events in DW's life: Moultrie Co, IL. He amassed hundreds of acres of land over the years as shown by the many entries in the county land records, the total amount is not known. He bought from his in-laws, siblings, children, parents, and ordinary citizens of the county. 1900 Sullivan Twp, Moultrie Co, IL. According to the census his birthdate was 2/1860, not 1859 as family records state. He was listed as a farmer with 5 children. Bef 12/1913 Marion Co, IL. DW owned a farm near Salem which son, Robert, operated for about a year, having a daughter this date while living there. Abt 1919 He built a grand home which was known throughout the county as the Van Gundy mansion. The Van Gundy Curve, on the northwest side of Sullivan, is so known, because of the house's location. The house was two story with a wraparound porch and lots of gingerbread. It was the first in the county with indoor plumbing and bathroom, and it had a basement with outside access so farm hands could shower and clean up before entering the house. To this day local residents always mention the "mansion" whenever they meet someone with the Van Gundy name. 4/8/1940 Marion Co, IL. It is not known exactly when DW bought the property there but he had owned it for at least the past 27 years, selling it by quit claim deed on this date to his 4 children for $1.00. Descendants told of a competition between DW and the local banker, each having extreme dislike for the other, each always trying to outdo the other. Following DW's death, the banker bought DW's land and razed the mansion.

child 470 ii. Stella VAN GUNDY was born in Macon Co, IL March 16, 1886. Stella died February 5, 1905 in Moultrie Co, IL, near Sullivan, at 18 years of age. Her body was interred in Greenhill Cem, Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL.

child + 471 iii. Robert Elmer VAN GUNDY was born April 25, 1887.

child + 472 iv. Carrie Ivy VAN GUNDY was born November 20, 1889.

child + 473 v. John Nimrod VAN GUNDY was born February 8, 1891.

child 474 vi. W J Bryan VAN GUNDY was born in Moultrie Co, IL November 8, 1896. W died October 11, 1897 in Moultrie Co, IL, at less than one year of age. His body was interred in Greenhill Cem, Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL.
