There was one account of Christian at age 10 in the History of Susquehanna and Juanita Valleys: "The boy was trying to cool off by dabbling his feet in the water from an old ferryboat at Strohecker's Landing on a hot day in August in 1776, when he saw the canoes of a party of Indians dart out from between the islands below the mouth of the Chillisquaque. The squaws and luggage were ashore and the men disappeared. The boy asked leave of his father to go up to the trading post. There he saw that Ludwig Derr had supplied the Indians with tin cups and had opened a barrel of whiskey for them. They got on a fearful bender and young Van Gundy saw the full intensity of the wildly whooping and dancing frolic of these drunken savages. In the midst of their wild revel, Capt. John Brady, who had been away at Fort Augusta that day, strode out from behind the Mill, kicked over the barrel and exclaimed, 'My God, Ludwig, what have you done?' Derr replied in his Dutchy brogue, that he was just giving them ' a dreet.' The Indians held this event as one of their grudges against Brady for long years afterward." Christian was a miller. Residences: 1790 Northumberland Co, PA, where Christian lived alone at census time. 1820 Buffalo Twp, Union Co, PA.
