221. Charles Wesley5 VAN GUNDY (Daniel4, David Sr3, Peter Sr2, Male1) was born in Salt Creek Twp, Pickaway Co, OH June 16, 1826. Charles died April 1860 in Macon Co, IL, at 33 years of age.

He married twice. He married Rachel Neal in Monticello, Piatt Co, IL, by the JP, March 22, 1849. Rachel was born in OH April 19, 1826. Rachel died May 12, 1853 in Monticello, Piatt Co, IL, at 27 years of age. Her body was interred in Old Monticello Cem, Monticello, Piatt Co, IL. At 24 years of age Rachel became the mother of William VAN GUNDY 1850. Rachel became the mother of Martha Ellen "Mattie" VAN GUNDY about 1851. At 26 years of age Rachel became the mother of John Neal VAN GUNDY in Monticello, Piatt Co, IL, 1852. Rachel was probably a sister to John who married Amelia Van Gundy, brother and sister married brother and sister.

He married Mary Ann Harshbarger Bender March 20, 1854. Mary became the mother of Julia Alice VAN GUNDY in Decatur, Macon Co, IL, October 15, 1857. Mary Ann was a widow.

At 24 years of age Charles became the father of William VAN GUNDY 1850. Charles became the father of Martha Ellen "Mattie" VAN GUNDY about 1851. At 26 years of age Charles became the father of John Neal VAN GUNDY in Monticello, Piatt Co, IL, 1852. At 31 years of age Charles became the father of Julia Alice VAN GUNDY in Decatur, Macon Co, IL, October 15, 1857. He was a farmer but later became a Methodist minister. Residences & events: 1847 Piatt Co, IL. Charles, being the oldest child when his father died, assumed the responsibility of the family, carrying through with his parents' plan to move the family to IL. Unfortunately, their mother died the next year and the family had to be split among friends and relatives. Charles and his new bride kept the two youngest boys, Daniel and Joseph. 1850 Sangamon Twp, Piatt Co, IL, where Charles is listed in the census. There was a Mary Ann Van Gundy as head of the house in the Okaw River Twp of the same county. 1850 Monticello Twp, Piatt Co, IL, where Charles bought the first PO Box. That box is now in the Monticello museum. 4/16/1851 & 5/29/1851 He bought two parcels of land, a total of 80 acres, on the high ridge 2 miles north of Monticello. That same year he was licensed by the Methodist Church, Bloomington Dist, to preach and appointed to the Middletown Mission. Some of the places he preached were Dresden; Chillicothe, OH; Paris, MO; Attica, Warren Co, IN; and finally Harristown, IL, near Decatur.

Charles Wesley VAN GUNDY and Mary Ann Harshbarger Bender had the following children:

child 380 i. Effie6 VAN GUNDY. Effie died before 1915.

child 381 ii. Nancy VAN GUNDY. Nancy died before 1915.

child 382 iii. James A VAN GUNDY. James died before 1915. He married Jane W Miller. Jane was born June 4, 1853.

child 383 iv. William VAN GUNDY.

child 384 v. Julia Alice VAN GUNDY was born in Decatur, Macon Co, IL October 15, 1857. Julia died 1936 at 78 years of age. She married John Walter Miller in Macon Co, IL, by John Tyler, MG, December 9, 1875. John was born in Harristown, Macon Co, IL June 4, 1855. Probably brother and sister married sister and brother as both Julia and James married Millers. Her father gave her a leather bound 1850 edition of "Sermons of John Wesley" which later generations also treasured.

Charles Wesley VAN GUNDY and Rachel Neal had the following children:

child 385 vi. William VAN GUNDY was born 1850. William died in infancy.

child 386 vii. Martha Ellen "Mattie" VAN GUNDY was born about 1851. She married Will Porter in Piatt Co, IL, at the home of George Neal by, September 27, 1874. Will was the son of a Methodist minister in Pickaway Co, OH. When their mother died, both Mattie and her brother, John, went to live with their Neal grandparents. Following their deaths, they lived with their uncle, George Neal, where they were both listed in the 1870 census.
