5. Capt Joseph Sr *3 Van Gundy (David2 VAN GUNDY, Male1) was born about 1737. Joseph died 1796/97 in Bethel Twp, Lancaster Co, PA, probably, at 60 years
of age.
He married Maria Magdalena Haldeman Shonauer about 1764. Maria was born 1738. Maria died
November 20, 1810 in Harrisburg, PA, at 72 years of age. Her body was interred November 21, 1810. At 27 years of age Maria
became the mother of Jacob VAN GUNDY in Stumpstown, Lancaster Co, PA, October 13, 1765. At 29 years of age Maria became the
mother of Catherine VAN GUNDY in Stumpstown, Lancaster Co, PA, December 13, 1767. At 32 years of age Maria became the mother of
Maria Margaret VAN GUNDY in Lebanon Co, PA, September 2, 1770. At 37 years of age Maria became the mother of Mary VAN
GUNDY 1775. At 37 years of age Maria became the mother of Elizabeth VAN GUNDY in Penns Twp, Lancaster Co, PA, October 16, 1775.
At 41 years of age Maria became the mother of Joseph Jr VAN GUNDY in Stumpstown, Lancaster Co, PA, October 5, 1779. At 43 years
of age Maria became the mother of Catherine Susanna VAN GUNDY in Jonestown, Lebanon Co, PA, June 26, 1782. "Maudlin Holdiman"
married Jacob "Shinaver" 12/10/1759 in Lancaster City, PA. He died 4 years later leaving her with two children, John and Barbara, and
expecting a third. His will was dated 12/13/1763 naming Jacob Erp and Jacob Sencenick as executors. Magdalena signed a statement on
12/30/1763 to the effect that she understood the terms of her late husband's will. However, his estate fell short of paying all debts so a
sale was held 1/16/1765. In the 1800 Harrisburg, PA, census Magdalene, as head of the household, was over 45 years of age and had living
with her, with 2 females 16-26 and one male under 10.
At 28 years of age Joseph became the father of Jacob VAN GUNDY in Stumpstown, Lancaster Co, PA, October 13, 1765. At 30 years
of age Joseph became the father of Catherine VAN GUNDY in Stumpstown, Lancaster Co, PA, December 13, 1767. At 33 years of age
Joseph became the father of Maria Margaret VAN GUNDY in Lebanon Co, PA, September 2, 1770. At 38 years of age Joseph
became the father of Mary VAN GUNDY 1775. At 38 years of age Joseph became the father of Elizabeth VAN GUNDY in Penns
Twp, Lancaster Co, PA, October 16, 1775. At 42 years of age Joseph became the father of Joseph Jr VAN GUNDY in Stumpstown,
Lancaster Co, PA, October 5, 1779. At 44 years of age Joseph became the father of Catherine Susanna VAN GUNDY in Jonestown,
Lebanon Co, PA, June 26, 1782. This Joseph & 2 others, also denoted by * in their names, have been thoroughly researched by the PA
genealogy society. It has not been determined exactly who Joseph's parents were but he could not be the son of Peter, as evidenced by
comparing ages according to Peter's estate settlement and the marriage with widow Shonauer. Joseph has been placed in this family because
David had a daughter, Magdalena, who married 4/21/1755, also in Lancaster Co, making David the right age and in the right vicinity to be
Joseph's father. The only other possibility is one Hans Gunde, a member of the German Baptist Brethren from Creyfelt (Ger), who arrived in
Philadelphia in 1729 and was living in Germantown in 1733. Residences & events in Joseph's life: 1/27/1765 Lancaster Co, PA. This
date was recorded in a deed stating that Joseph "VonGundy" was named in the will of Jacob "Shonower" as an executor of his estate.
However, the original will named two other men as executors so perhaps this was when Joseph became an interested party or perhaps the date
he married Shonauer's widow. 5/1/1769 Bethel Twp, Lancaster Co, PA. Joseph and Magdalena appointed Jacob Miley their attorney "to
recover from the executor of Jacob Shonower, deceased, all incomes due Magdalene, 'leat' wife of Jacob Shonower." 1773 Stumpstown,
Lancaster Co, PA. Joseph is on the tax list there. 1774 A son's biography says Joseph left home this date "to fight for his homeland
when news came of Lexington and Concord." 12/22/1774 Bethel Twp, Lancaster Co, PA, was still his address according to a deed in the
settlement of Jacob Shonower's estate...Shonower's son, John, having attained the age of 14 years. 10/19/1774 & 12/22/1774 Penns Twp,
Northumberland Co, PA. Joseph had 2 pieces of land called Parma and Palatine, a total of 150 acres, surveyed. These tracts were patented to
him on 4/20/1776 and may have been a reward for serving his country. 3/9/1775 Joseph bought 2 more tracts, called Verona and Veroli, each
with 42 acres, adjacent to what he already owned from a Jacob Armbrister. These tracts were also patented to him 4/1776. Abt 1775 Penns
Twp. He moved the family moved there sometime before his daughter was baptized there in October. 4/18/1776 Snyder Co, PA. Joseph
obtained another warrant for a survey of lands but this was never patented to him, rather by "sundry conveyeances and long possession" was
finally patented to Abraham Zeigler in 1842. 1/30/1777 Philadelphia, PA. He was listed as a 3rd Lieut. on the muster roll of Benjamin
Weiser's Co of the Northumberland Co Militia. 11/11/1777 Stumpstown, Lancaster Co, PA. Joseph took the Oath of Allegiance as a resident of
the area. The family probably had fled back to safer territory, along with many other settlers, due to the numerous Indian forays into the
Susquehanna and Juniata valleys in the late 1770s. It was said he commanded a company in Gen John Sullivan's expedition against the Indians
in PA and NY but records have not been found to verify that. There were, in the spring of 1779, many able bodied men in the Susquehanna
Valley preparing to enter "boat service, " the convoying of Sullivan's commisary up the north branch of the Susquehanna River. 1787 Penns
Twp, Snyder Co, PA. This was the last year Joseph was listed on the county tax rolls as a landowner there, noted as a nonresident for the
last 3 years. 8/1787 Northumberland Co, PA. A suit against Joseph for a debt of $200 was brought by executors of Hannah Lethgo's
estate. Joseph had given a mortgage in that amount to Hannah but failed to make payment. The case was continued, Joseph confessed judgement
2/1790, he filed no contest 5/1790, and on 8/1790 the court docket states: "witness not to be found." The case was finally decided
against Joseph and the sheriff was ordered to sell the 4 parcels of land in Penns Twp, at public vendue. This was done on 8/3/1791, Thomas
Duncan being the purchaser. This was the last record found for this Joseph Van Gundy.

Franklin Co, OH, at 73 years of age. She married Frederick Agler. He resides in Franklin Co, OH.
She was baptized in Lebanon Co, PA, Tabor First Reformed Church, January 4, 1771. Religion: religion unknown.

Mary VAN GUNDY was born 1775. Mary died after 1853. Her body was interred in Harrisburg Cem, Harrisburg,
PA. Mary was confirmed at 19 years of age in Fredericksburg, PA, St John's Evangelical Lutheran, May 3, 1795. Apparently Mary never
married, she was Mary Gundy the rest of her life. 4/5/1797 Dauphin Co, PA. "Thomas Ridge and Margaret, his wife, to Elizabeth Gundy and
Mary Gundy, both of Bethel Township, spinsters." They bought the property at 129 Walnut Street, Harrisburg, probably because their father
had died and they decided to move nearer their married sister, Catherine. It was unusual for women to buy property in their own names in
those days, unless there was no man to take care of them.

Elizabeth VAN GUNDY was born in Penns Twp, Lancaster Co, PA October 16, 1775. Elizabeth died about 1822 in
Dauphin Co, PA. She married three times. She married Male Isett BET 1805 AND 1812. She married John Howard in Dauphin Co, PA, before 1801. She married Male Fox
before 1813.
She was baptized in Lancaster Co, PA, Rau's (Salem) Lutheran Church. Religion: religion unknown. 4/5/1797 Dauphin Co, PA.
Elizabeth, as a "spinster," bought property in Harrisburg with sister, Mary, but then married shortly and deeded her half to Mary on
3/9/1801.

Joseph Jr VAN GUNDY was born in Stumpstown, Lancaster Co, PA October 5, 1779. Joseph died May 9, 1803 in
Harrisburg, PA, at 23 years of age. His body was interred in Harrisburg Cem, Harrisburg, PA. He was baptized in Stumpstown,
Lancaster Co, PA, St John's Evangelical Lutheran, April 1780. Religion: religion unknown.

Catherine Susanna VAN GUNDY was born in Jonestown, Lebanon Co, PA June 26, 1782. She was baptized in
Jonestown, Lebanon Co, PA, Swatara Reformed Church, December 3, 1782. Religion: religion unknown. Catherine was confirmed at 14 years
of age in Fredericksburg, PA, St John's Evangelical Lutheran, April 30, 1797. She was probably the third female living in Mary's household.
