31. Joseph *4 Van Gundy (Peter Jr3 VAN GUNDY, Peter Sr2, Male1) was born in PA 1767. Joseph died May 22, 1852 in Ross Co, OH, at 84 years of age.

He married Mary (Van Gundy) about 1789. Mary died BET 1840 AND 1850. Mary became the mother of Peter Van Gundy 1798. Mary became the mother of Joseph Van Gundy 1802. Mary became the mother of Mary Van Gundy about 1804. Mary became the mother of John Van Gundy in Ross Co, OH, February 1, 1807. Mary became the mother of Jonathan Van Gundy 1808. Mary became the mother of Samuel Van Gundy in Ross Co, OH, 1809. Mary became the mother of Catherine Van Gundy about 1812. Mary became the mother of Eli Van Gundy about 1813. Mary became the mother of Gabriel Van Gundy about 1815. Mary became the mother of Aaron Van Gundy about 1816. Mary became the mother of Sarah Van Gundy in Ross Co, OH, 1818. Mary became the mother of Cornelius Van Gundy 1890. Little is known about Mary other than her name, which was on a deed along with her husband, as well as the death certificate of son, Jonathan.

At 31 years of age Joseph became the father of Peter Van Gundy 1798. At 35 years of age Joseph became the father of Joseph Van Gundy 1802. Joseph became the father of Mary Van Gundy about 1804. At 39 years of age Joseph became the father of John Van Gundy in Ross Co, OH, February 1, 1807. At 41 years of age Joseph became the father of Jonathan Van Gundy 1808. At 42 years of age Joseph became the father of Samuel Van Gundy in Ross Co, OH, 1809. Joseph became the father of Catherine Van Gundy about 1812. Joseph became the father of Eli Van Gundy about 1813. Joseph became the father of Gabriel Van Gundy about 1815. Joseph became the father of Aaron Van Gundy about 1816. At 51 years of age Joseph became the father of Sarah Van Gundy in Ross Co, OH, 1818. At 123 years of age Joseph became the father of Cornelius Van Gundy 1890. This Joseph & 2 others, also denoted by * in their names, have been extensively researched by the PA genealogy society. However, the ages of Joseph and Mary conflict with the children's birthdates, making the parents much too old, unless Mary was considerably younger than Joseph and they married much later. The names of his children were supplied by Chancery Records. Residences & events in the life of Joseph Van Gundy: 1785 Northumberland Co, PA. He was assessed 5.0s in taxes for 300 acres as a non-resident of the county. 1786 Again as a non-resident his taxes for 200 acres was 3.4. Apparently the tax assessor missed 100 acres as the next year it was back to 300. 1787 Still a non-resident his 300 acres were assessed at 6.8. 1790 Buffalo Twp, Northumberland Co, PA. In the census, his household consisted of 1 male over 16, 3 males under 16, and 2 females, some probably were relatives rather than his own children. Next door was Christian Vangunday. 6/28/1792 He warranteed 2 tracts of land, one of 125 acres, the other with 150. 3/1/1793 & 3/14/1793 He obtained warrants for 2 tracts of land containing 400 acres each. Under the name of Joseph Gundy, he conveyed one tract to his brother, John Gundy, by deed dated 5/25/1799, and the property was patented to John by the Commonwealth of PA, 5/30/1803. On 7/2/1804, this same tract was sold by John and his wife, Polly. 1798 The Federal Tax Assessment shows Joseph was owner of the above as well as another tract in White Deer Twp. He got warrants for several other pieces of property in Northumberland but no records have been found to show he ever patented any of them. He had 408 acres warranted in W. Buffalo Twp but sold or assigned it to a Mr. Gray and Mr. Hayes. 10/28/1799 Ross Co, OH. On this date he gave a promissory note to Samuel Hornback but when he became delinquent on the note, Hornbeck sued him. The suit date was 8/1803. 4/15/1805 Joseph entered the SW 1/4, Sect 11 Twp 8 Rg 21. Following the precident set in PA, he assigned the land to brother, John Van Gundy, who patented the land and with his wife, Polly, sold it in 1830 because they lived in Indiana by then. 1820 Spring Twp, Ross Co, OH. Joseph, 2 Johns, Cornelius, and a Famey (?) were living near to each other according to the census. 1832 Crawford Co, OH. Joseph and wife, Mary, sold land there. Harrison Twp, Ross Co, OH. Although no records of purchases have been found, Joseph sold 5 acres of the property in the NE 1/4, Sect 20 Twp 9 Rg 20 to an Ira Ring, 3/4 acre to son, Peter, in 1847 and another part to son, Eli, in 1848. The rest was sold by his heirs after his death. 1850 Joseph was living with son, Jonathan, at census time. Mary had apparently died as she was not listed.

Joseph * Van Gundy and Mary (Van Gundy) had the following children:

child 151 i. Peter5 Van Gundy was born 1798. He married Phebe Speakman January 16, 1822.

child 152 ii. Joseph Van Gundy was born 1802. He married Anne Wilcox February 8, 1826.

child 153 iii. Mary Van Gundy was born about 1804. She married Peter Chester March 21, 1824.

child + 154 iv. John Van Gundy was born February 1, 1807.

child + 155 v. Jonathan Van Gundy was born 1808.

child 156 vi. Samuel Van Gundy was born in Ross Co, OH 1809. He married Mary Ann Combs February 3, 1834. Mary was born in Ross Co, OH July 1811. Mary died October 4, 1895 at 84 years of age. Samuel and Mary Ann had 5 children.

child 157 vii. Catherine Van Gundy was born about 1812. She married Joseph Harker January 1, 1832.

child + 158 viii. Eli Van Gundy was born about 1813.

child 159 ix. Gabriel Van Gundy was born about 1815. He married Ann Wilcox Van Gundy February 20, 1836. Ann was probably the same Anne Wilcox who had been married Gabriel's brother, Joseph, as her name was now Van Gundy.

child 160 x. Aaron Van Gundy was born about 1816. He married Susannah Hager February 20, 1836.

child 161 xi. Sarah Van Gundy was born in Ross Co, OH 1818. She married Henry Swingler. It's highly unlikely that Henry was married to this Sarah Van Gundy as she was only 16 when she married Mr. Combs and he lived until 1907, unless they divorced, also highly unlikely.

child 162 xii. Cornelius Van Gundy was born 1890. He married Sarah Clayton. He was a veteran of the War of 1812. He had 3 children born between 1810-1820 Residences & events: 1820 Springfield Twp, Ross Co, OH. 1840 Fountain Co, OH. There was a Cornelius Van Gundy who may be this person or his son. Jasper, IA
