His mother, Jane Van Buskirk, and brother, John Powell, gave
permission for his marriage 3 wks before his 21st birthday. Sarah's
mother and step-father, Gilley & Henry Hannas, signed for her.
The following was included in their marriage records:
"February the 15th 1832
This is to certify that Nelson Powell and Sally Jayne has agreed to marry we thar fore cirtify that she is nineteen years of age and that we have giv our concent for them to marry.

"State of Illinois, County of Vermilion
I, John Powell of said county do solemnly swear that my mother Jane Van Buskirk hath given her free and voluntary consent to the marriage of my brother Nelson Powell and Sarah Jayne and desired this deponent to make the same known to the clerk of the county commissioners court of said county in order to obtain license for said marriage---and this deponent would on this oath further state that he was present and saw Henry Hannas and Gilley Hannas her mother sign a certificate of her age and consent to said marriage--which said certificate is this day deposited in the clerks office--So help me God.
