Notes for Josiah\John "Pap" DAILY

His name depends on which document is being read. In his father's will it was John, census records have Josiah. It is possible that he was named for both his father and Grandfather Josiah McGuire.

Residences & events:

Scott Co, IN, where he was born. Although 3 of his children told the 1930 census taker he was born in OH.

Washington Co, IN

1856 Cooks Mills, Coles Co, IL. He probably arrived in the same party with sibilings, James and Polly, and their families. In the county history is the following: "Somewhere on the trail a tragic thing happened, a child of one of the party fell out of the wagon and was run over and killed. They buried it as best they could and after a while, proceeded on westward."

7/24/1860 S Okaw Twp, Coles Co, IL. He was living with his brother, James, at census time next door to sister Mary and Emanuel Floyd, followed by their mother and step-father, Collison Porter. Josiah was a 22 year olf farm laborer.

Josiah served as Pvt of Co F 3rd IL Cav in the Civil War.

8/11/1870 N Okaw Twp, Coles Co, IL. That year Josiah, 32, was a farmer with property = $1200/400 according to the census. Margaret was 25 and the family consisted of only 1 little girl, Mary, 1. Clarrissa Price, 11, Margaret's niece, also lived there. The family lived in a row of Whitleys: next door was Margaret's brother, John, followed by their mother, then her sister, Bashie Williams, and next was sister, Malinda Price.

9/12/1880 Same place. The census taker that year recorded him as Joseph Dailey, 42, and living next door to brother James. Wife Margaret was only 27 and children listed were: Mary, 11; John, 10; Nancy, 8; Margaret, 6; Lucinda, 4; Albert 2, and Martha, 3/12 born in Apr. Margaret's nephew, William Nelson, 20, farmer, was also there as a boarder. Next door on the other side was Malinda Price and 2 doors down was Elisha Whitley

6/6/1900 Still at the same residence but living next door to daughter, Mary & Nicholas Easton, at census time. Josiah's family included: "Sinday," 24, Albert, 22, Martha, 20, Ida M, 17, Josiah, 29 (should be 16), Silva, 13, and Alonzo, 11. Widowed brother-in-law, Emanuel Floyd, 74, lived with them as a boarder. Josiah was 64 while Margaret was 56, married for 40 years. Margaret had borne 15 children but only 11 were still living.

Wabash Co, IL. Daughter Sylvia and her husband apparently lived on Daily property there and as of 2003 there are still descendants in that area. Could she have inherited it?

4/28/1910 Lancaster Pct, Wabash Co, IL. That census recorded Josiah, 71 and widowed, with children Joseph, 26, Ida, 28, Sylvia, 22, and Lonzo, 20. Josiah was a retired farmer, both sons were farmers. A Spurling family lived next door, relatives of future son-in-law, Harvey Spurling.

The 1900 census says his birth date was Jun 1835. Sons Albert and Alonzo told the 1930 census taker their father was born in OH.

His final days were spent under the care of daughter Sylvia Strine at West Salem, IL. IL death records say he lived Road Dist No 2.
