Van Gundy Family Tree

Notes for George W MERRIS

Residences & events in George's life:

Bluffs, Scott Co, IL. When the rest of his father's family moved east, he stayed behind.

He served in Co H 116 Illinois Volunteer Infantry for 3 yrs, being discharged 8/1865. About half of that time he was in the hospital, spending 1 yr in Camp Butler Hospital (near Springfield, IL)

1880 Henry, Vernon Co, MO. The family was found there by the census taker. George was 37 and a farmer. Helen was also 37 and had children: Louella, 13; Samuel, 10; twins, Charley and Zora, 6; and Harry, 1 mo.

1904 Decatur, Macon Co, IL. A daughter said the family moved that year but it would have been without George, if his death date is correct.

He died of cancer leaving a wife and 5 children.

His death date may be incorrect as a daughter said the family moved to Decatur in 1904 but perhaps the widow moved to be nearer the rest of the family for help and support. One descendant has his death as 1 year earlier.
