Notes for Asa MERRIS


In the 1850 census his name was Ira.

He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

Residences & events:

Macon Co, IL. He was a farmer east of town.

1880 South Macon, Macon Co, IL. At census time the family was living with the James Cunningham family, apparently a boarding house as several others were also living there. Asa was 36 and a farmer, Elizabeth was 35 and they had 2 small children: Carroll, 6; and Fannie, 1. According to that census, Asa's mother was born in PA.

1896 Preparing for retirement, he moved into town.

6/5/1900 Same place. That year Asa was a 56 year old widower with the occupation of landlord. Daughter Fanny L, 21, lived with him.

1903 He was listed as a retired farmer in the city directory.

1908 He represented the Merris family at the funeral of Uncle Adam Van Gundy in Bluffs, IL.

The date posted is from family listings but his obituary said he was born 1/20/1844.

Asa died a lingering death from stomach cancer.
