Notes for Lycurgus Erastus "Curg" POWELL

Residences:

12/18/1897 Cadwell, Moultrie Co, IL. Curg was the postmaster for a little over a year. Three years later, Uncle Nelson E, would take the position.

6/4/1900 Okaw Twp, Shelby Co, Il. According to the census that year, Lycurgus was 28, Jessie was 25. They had been married 6 years wit 2 children, both living, James K, 5, and Dorris V, 3. George Johnson, 50, hired hand lived with the family. Curg's occupation looks like tanner but it may have been farmer>

1901 Shelbyville, Shelby Co, IL. The wedding of his cousin, Joe Heberdon Powell, to Pearl Gannaway was held at his home there in 1901. His children attended the Shelbyville schools with Doris graduating in 1914.

4/20/1910 Arthur, Lowe Twp, Moultrie Co, IL. Having moved before the next census, Lycurgus was 38 years old and employed as a wholesale grain dealer. He and Jessie, 39, had been married 16 years with 2 children James R, 14, and Doris V, 12.

1910 Arthur, Douglas Co, IL, where he bought part interest in the grain elevator on the east side of town which he ran for several years. Apparently the family moved back to Shelby Co as his children claimed Shelbyville as home during this same period. His obituary states:

"Mr. Powell is a former Arthur resident. He operated grain elevators in this section for many years."

1915 Duvall, Shelby Co, IL, was his residence when niece, Ivy Rigney, died. An article on his son, Ray, said he was a junior partner with his father in the grain and general merchandise business at Duvall, 5 miles north of Shelbyville, the partnership dating from Ray's return from WWI in 1919.

1/2/1920 Shelbyville, Shelby Co, IL was where the next census taker found the family. He was 48 and a grain dealer with his own elevator. Jessie was 44 and daughter Doris was 22.

1926 He was still at the same residence at reunion time per Powell reunion minutes.

1931 Springfield, Sangamon Co, IL, was his address at reunion time when he signed the roster.

1941 Washington, DC

His obituary says he died in Washington but cemetery records say NJ.
He was actually living with his daughter who had lived in Washington
DC for years but may have moved to the suburbs sometime before his
death.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, place and other
details were not given.
