At census time on 6/29/1900, son James, 45, had taken over as head of the family having moved into the town of Clarksville, Butler Co, IA . He was a farmer so may have taken over his mother's farm as well. Hester was a 79 year old widow who had birthed 10 children, 7 of whom were still living. Daughter Eliza, 43, was still at home as well. Most of the rest of the children lived in the same county but her Van Gundy relatives were gone.
By the next census on 5/7/1910 the family had not changed. They again lived in Butler Twp, where James, 56, owned his own farm. Hester was 89 and Eliza was 45 (should be 53).
