Descendants said he was a quiet man, rarely spoke but had afantastic sense of humor. His physical description was 5' 8" tall, blue eyes and dark hair. Some said he was a "real ladies man."

8/8/1855 Story Co, IA, about 5 miles south of Ames, where he settled with a 2 room house and became a farmer.
1855 Moultrie Co, IL. Elijah was on the delinquent tax list, probably because he had left the state.
8/31/1861 He enlisted in Co B 2nd IA Cav to serve in the Civil War, fighting in the campaigns along the lower Mississippi River.
Corinth, Miss. He sustained a serious injury near town when his horse fell on him during a scouting mission.
10/3/1864 He was discharged from the army with the rank of Sgt.
1902 He was the owner of Walnut Grove Stock Farm.
Story Co death records show an infant daughter born to Elijah Purvis and Mary Taylor on 8/15/1912. The child died 9/8/1912. Was it this Elijah or another? His family was said to be "quite upset" over the Taylor child so apparently they thought it was his. If so, at age 82 he had had an illicit affair with another woman!
Some descendants have his birth year as 1830.
He fell off the roof and it took about 2 days before Dany could get him into the house and another day before someone came by to help. By then it was too late and he died from the injuries.
