7/30/1860 T13N R6E, PO Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL was their address at census time. Joseph was listed as a 27 year old farmer but had only personal property which was worth $200. Next door were his parents so he probably helped his father. Wife Jane J was 26, their only child was Clarence A, 6 moinths. Wm A Drew, 17, farm hand was also counted there. Two doors down was Nancy's uncle William Purvis.

6/11/1880 Washington Twp, Story Co, IA. The census taker recorded in the family Joseph, 48, Nancy, 46, Adison, 20, Manerva, 19, Bessie, 13, Ulysus, 11, Nellie, 9, and Homer, 6. Also listed there were hired hands, John Georgenson, 18, works on farm; and Orpeas France, 20, laborer. Joseph was a farmer, Adison worked on the farm.
6/19/1900 City of Marion, Linn Co, IA. Joseph A, 67, lived in a boarding house of male railroad workers at census time. He had been married 12 years and worked as a laborer.
1900 Sioux City, Woodbury Co, IA. He was counted again at home at age 65, married 10 years to Sarah, 58, who had never had children but living with them was Blanch E Booker,
4/16/1910 Same place. That year he was a 77 year old widower boarding with the William Booker family. He was still working as a laborer but at what is blurred, may be wholesale hardware, of which Booker managed.
1/15/1920 City of Portland, Multnomah Co, OR. At age 87, he was living with daughter Florence and Wilson McLaughlin and most likely died there the following year.
