A family listing by Walter Burgner says Mary's maiden name was Mills and she was the widow of a Richard Shippey. There is a record in the Parish Register of Christ Church to Lettice Shippey, daughter of Richard and Mary Shippey, baptized 12/19/1682. Considering Mary's age, she could have been married previously. However, most researchers list her as the daughter of John and Mary Shippey.
Tradition is that Mary immigrated to America as an indentured servant in connection with a relative, Rebecca who married a Robert Cole.
By 10/16/1716 the Christ Church vestry was providing funds to buy wine and other goods for Mary Purvis, widow of John.
