10/21/1850 Dist 6, Jackson Co, TN. Samuel, 42, born in VA, had no occupation or property at census time. Mary was recorded as Malinda, 30, with children James, 6, Margaret, 4, and John, 6 months. (Where were the rest of the children?) Also counted there was 13 year old Mariann Whitehead (Whitehall?). Malinda and all children were born in TN. Next door was Dosha Martin, 65, also born in VA, Samuel's mother. Down the road was the family of William and Margaret Whitehead, ages 66 & 68 respectively.
1/2/1860 Same place, PO Celina. That year at census time, Saml was 52, a fairly wealthy farmer with $7500/500 worth of property. Malinda was 40 and children in the household at the time were James, 17, Peggy, 14, John, 9, and "Olonzo", 3. Next door was brother Willet, probably living in the old homesteady left by their mother.
Researcher Richard Martin says the family was displaced by the Civil War to IL.
