8/19/1850 Lower Okaw Twp, Coles Co, IL. His family lived next door to his widowed mother at census time. He was 25, wife Mary was 20, and they had 1 mo old daughter Serilda at that time. Nephews, David and John Duncan, ages 11 and 9 respectively, also lived with them. Two doors down lived sister, Armindy and Braxton Price. John was listed as a farmer but no property was recorded. Perhaps he helped his mother with her farm.
7/24/1860 South Okaw Twp, PO Mattoon, Coles Co, IL. At census time, John was a day laborer with $20 in personal property. He was 32, Mary was 30, their 4 children were: Serilda, 10, Minda, 8, William, 4, and John, 1. Next door was sister, Malinda and Miles Price, and down the road was their mother.
1870 N Okaw Twp, Coles Co, IL. At that time John was a farmer with personal property = $300, no real estate. Since he lived between his mother and sister, Margaret and Josiah Daily, he probably helped on both farms. His age was listed as 35, not 47. His wife was Sarah, 32, born IL, not Mary. Children in the house were Serilda, 20, Arminta, 18, William, 16, John, 12, Sarah, 8, Elijah, 6, and Rosa, 2.
6/26/1880 Same place. The census taker found farmer John at age 55, Mary at 54. Their large family consisted of John M, 21, works on farm; Sarah, 18; Elijah, 16, works on farm; Rosa, 12; and brother Fields, 53, also a farmer.
1900 Still there. He was 76 years old, married 56 years to Mary, 74, who had birthed only 1 child (?) who was still alive. They were living with son Elijah, 2 doors down was daughter Serilda Morgan and family.
