Notes for William Jasper WHITLEY



Residences & events:

6/7/1880 N Okaw Twp, Coles Co, IL. The census recorded William J at age 25, Susan E at 21. They had only 1 little boy, William, 3. William Sr was a farmer. Neighbors were unknown names.

6/1900 Same place. That year the census listed a large family for William, 46, and Susan, 39. They had been married 25 years with 13 children but unfortunately only 7 still survived, Albert W, 21, farm hand; John L, 15, farm laborer; Bertha M, 14, house worker; Grace M, 12, Horace O and Flossa M, 1. William was a farmer, both parents were born in KY. A few doors down was brother John R, followed by David Daily.

1918 Humboldt, N Okaw Twp, Coles Co, IL was his residence when listed among the county farmers. He was a tenant farmer of 53 acres in S10 owned by Robert Smith. He and wife, Susan, had 7 children at that time and he had been a county resident since birth. William and brother John were the only Whitleys listed.

1/6/1920 Same place. At census time William J, 65, and Susan E, 60, lived alone but the road was filled with relatives. He was still farming, owned their home but with a mortgage.

4/29/1930 Still there. By the next census William, 76, was a widower and lived with divorced son Horace.
