6/29/1860 Shelbyville, Shelby Co, IL was his residence at census time. At that time he was a 30 year old farmer with property valued at $6700/1865, a fair amount for the day. Living with him were wife Mary, 28, Napoleon S, 2, and Wm H, 2 months, three farm hands: Jefferson Carr, 20, Geo Dillsaver, 23, and Spicer Cushman, 18. They also had a servant, Amanda Groves, 24. Cushman's relatives lived next door.
6/20/1870 Holland Twp near Shelbyville, Shelby Co, IL. The census recorded his name as John Hoglan, age 38, a farmer and his estate had grown to $9000/4000. His wife, only listed as Mrs, was 28 so was second wife Carrie. The children were: Nap S, 12; W H, 10; Spray (sp ?) Jane, 8; and Clara, 6. Living with them were a John McCowan, 27, Alfred Wabile, 20, Lavina Beam, 18, and Edward Beam, 7 mo. None of them had occupations or relationships listed. Next door was the Jacob Elliott family with William Elliott next to him and down the road in the other direction was another Elliott with first name that looks like Tharlies (?). All probably Mary's relatives through her mother.
6/15/1880 Same place. The census that year found him with wife, Carrie, 44, and children Napoleon S, 22; William H, 20; Clara, 17; Lizzie, 8; John R, 6 and farm laborer, Levi Wheat. John was still farming. Next door lived the family of William Elliott, a few doors down was Jacob Elliott, and even farther was John Elliott.
