10/17/1850 Scott Co, IL. The census said he lived alone as a 22 year old farmer with $800 in property. He had probably prepared a place to bring his new bride in another month.

8/20/1860 Sullivan Co, PO Pennville, MO. The census taker recorded James M, 32, and Julia, 27, with several children: James, 9, Stephen, 6, George, 4, Frances, 3, Eliza, 2, and Julia, 5 months. James was a farmer with $4000/2025 worth of property.
James served as a Lt with a MO regiment during the entire Civil War. Apparently there were no units in the area as most men of western IL crossed the river to join the army.
1870 T12 R8, Macoupin Co, near Palmyra, IL. James' estate had more than doubled since the last census to $9000/3510. He was 42 and Julie was 38. The large family consisted of: James, 18, Stephen, 16, George, 14, Frances, 13, Eliza, 11, Julia, 10, Charles, 8, son A B, 7, John, 5, Sarah, 4, and Lewis, 1 month.
6/12/1880 N Palmyria, Macoupin Co, IL. That year at census time James was 52, Julia was 48, he was still farming. Children at home were Fanny, 22, Eliza, 20, Julie, 19, Charles, 17, Abiram, 16, Sarah, 14, and Lewis C, 10. Next door lived son James Jr.
1889 Macoupin Co, IL, was still his residence when he was mentioned in his brother's biography.
