Before 1863 Wabash Twp, Clark Co, IL. Having jumped across the river, son, Joseph was born there that year.
10/4/1864 Some descendants say the he joined the Civil War as a widower but Nancy's last child wasn't born until 1880 and he didn't marry Amanda until 1899. He did serve as Pvt in the Union army from Indiana.
1870 Wabash Twp, Clark Co, IL. The census taker found him and his wife with 4 children. He was 38 years old, a farmer with only personal property valued at $400, Nancy was 32. The children were Lydia, 9, Joseph, 7, George, 4, and William, 1.
1890-1892 Macksville, Vigo Co, IN. When he moved back across the border is unknown but he was shown to be there by the Terre Haute, IN directories of those years. Living in the same household were sons George, Joseph, and William.
6/29/1896 W Terre Haute, Vigo Co, IN. He must have moved back across the river some time before he stated in a general affidavit that his brother, John R, had lived with him in Sweet Water Twp, Vigo Co, IN, until John joined the Civil War in 1863, and that he knew nothing about John's divorce from a wife prior to Mary Collins.
His obituary said he was 83 making his birth year 1830.
