9/4/1850 Harrison Twp, Ross Co, OH. At census time Eli was 36 years old, listed as a farmer without any property. His family consisted of: wife Lydia, 29, Andrew I, 12; Mary M, 11; Julius L, 9; Abraham W, 7; Susannah, 5; and James R, 2. Next door was the family of sister Mary Chester.
6/16/1860 Deerfield Twp, Ross Co, OH. The census listed him as Elija, 46, a day laborer, wife Lydia was 39. The children at that time were: Andrew J, 22, Julius C, 19, Abram W, 16, Susan, 15, James R, 12, Eli A, 8, Jonathan J, 5, and Arther T, 1. Also living there was a 20 year old farm hand, William Marker. (If Eli was a day laborer, Marker must have been working at the neighbor's farm.)
By 1866 IL where daughter Lydia was born.
8/5/1870 Urbana, Champaign Co, OH. At that time Eli was a 60 year old wood sawyer with only $100 in personal property. Lydia was 48 and children still at home were Eli J, 15, Arther T, 11, and Lydia A, 4. Living with them were newlywed daughter Susan "Hanly", 25, and her husband Albert, 26, a worker in a soap factory.
7/15/1880 Loramie, Shelby Co, OH was where the next census taker found the family, recording Eli at age 67 with the occupation of miller. His parents were born in Holland and PA. Wife Lydia was 59 and the only child at home was daughter Lydia A, 14.
