On the trek from OH to IL, the wagon train went through Yeddo, IN where they stopped to visit relatives. While there Polly became ill and died.
She was buried along the road side, hiding the grave by building a fire upon it and moving the wagons near it so Indians would think it had been a campfire and would not dig for trinkets. They then scattered ashes about to ward off wild animals that might also desecrate the grave. The site was marked with stones and the plan was to move her once settled in IL but upon returning, her father could not find the grave.
