1850-1860 CA. Hiram and brother, William, went west to find gold, the outcome is unknown but both remained in CA.
6/1860 Santa Barbara Co, CA. He was 30 years old and living with brother William at census time. His occupation was farmer with $500 in personal property.
7/6/1870 Gilroy, Santa Clara Co, CA. Listed as H Van with Gundy as the last name, he was 40 years old and had a large estate for the day worth $5000/1000 (Had he found gold?) Wife Martha was 24 and their children were Grant, 7, Amelia, 4, and Martha, 1. Living with them were Saml Bailey, 24, laborer and Lang Ah (?), 24, also a laborer. Head of the house next door was also an Ah.
6/23/1880 Salinas, San Luis Obispo Co, CA. The census taker recorded Hiram at age 51, a farmer, with wife Martha, 35, and a house full of children: Grant, 17, Amelia, 14, Martha, 11, May, 7, Ralph, 4, and Emmett, 1. In the same county was brother William.
Some say it is Galivan Hills Memorial Cemetery but the place posted is from a letter his son Owen wrote.
