Notes for Betty Lou PURVIS

Betty won Miss Teen Age New Mexico in 1964 and was the only equestrian
from New Mexico invited to ride in the Tournament of Roses Parade in
1965. In that parade she rode a Palomino horse with Gene Autry's
silver mounted saddle. She later won several horsemanship
championships.

Gary Lombert, NY composer, wrote a song for her titled "Keep America
Beautiful" which she sang for Vice President Humphrey. Humphrey was
so pleased with the performance that upon returning to Washington, he
told Lady Bird Johnson about it. In a 1966 visit to Santa Fe, Lady
Bird requested Betty sing it for her also, then sent her an
autographed photo of the two of them together.

She later received a couple of visits from Lawrence Welk trying to
cajole her into singing with his band.
