Clifford Cabell Purvis was a Private in Capt. Thomas M. Boyd's Company G, Nelson County Grays, 19th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. He enrolled for active service 1 May 1861 at Massie's Mill. He was mustered into service 20 May 1861 at Charlottesville. His company subsequently became Co. G, 19th Regt. Va. Inf. He was on a roll of prisoners of war and was sent for exchange from Ft. Delaware, Del. to Aikens Landing, VA. on 21 Oct. 1862. Declared exchanged 10 Nov. 1862. He was taken at Williamsport 15 Sept. 1862. He was hospitalized at General Hospital #9, Richmond, VA. and Chimborago #1 Hospital at Richmond-transferred to Huguenot Springs.

In 1870, he was farming two houses from his father.
