Descendants say he was married 4 times but his first 3 children do not fit into his first marriage according to their birth dates.

1/20/1870 Hidalgo, Crooked Creek Twp, Jasper Co, IL. At census time, James was listed as a farmer, at age 28, but had no property. Louisa was 19 and the children listed were Lizia J, 8, William 5, and Alwildia (?), 9 months. There was a Francis Elliott, 73, born in KY, living with them, Connors were on both sides of them and 2 doors down was brother-in-law, Calvin Gipson.
1880 Greenup, Cumberland Co, IL. At census time he had married again with a new daughter. Listed were James at 36 with occupation of "works on farm, " Mary, 22, her daughter, Sarah, 1, and children from previous marriages, William, 15 and Allic, 10. They were the only Davees in the county.
1900 Salamanca Twp, Cherokee Co, KS. Having followed the westward movement, the census taker found them there, listing James J at age 56, married 21 years, with the occupation of farm laborer. Wife Emma was 42, had birthed 6 children but only 3 still survived. Living with them were James, 19, and Albert, 16.
1910 The families whereabouts that year at census time is unknown.
1920 Muncrief, McClain Co, OK. That year Jim Davee, 77, was a widower and living with widowed nephew, George C Parker, and George's widowed mother, Katie.
Was this man crippled?
The death by lightning of Grant Davee, recently, calls to mind the fact that of five sons, the Rev. Ben Davee, who grew to manhood, but one remains; and he unfortunately is a cripple for life-some time last winter, we believe, a tree having fallen on him, breaking his legs.
