Notes for George Smith CONNER

Residences & events:

1849 Fayette Co, IN was where he and Jane married.

1850 Van Buren Twp, Shelby Co, IN was where the census taker found him and Jane with one small daughter and one of George's relatives, Eli Conner, 18. George was 25, Jane, 22 and little Rebecca A, 1.

1855 Jasper Co, IL. A note written in cemetery records states he and Jane arrived this date.

1860 Crooked Creek, Jasper Co, IL. That year George was a 35 year old farmer with property valued at $2500/600. Jane was 31 and the children were Margaret E, 1, and George S Davee, 8, Jane's baby brother. Why he was living with them at that time is unknown but perhaps he couldn't get along with the new step-mother.

1860 Same place. George, at 44, had increased his estate to $3500/2000 and was still farming. Jane was 41, Margaret was 11, Martha, 4, and Benjamin, 4 mo.

George remarried 10 months after Jane's death and had 4 more children.

His biography written in the 1884 History of Jasper County Illinois says that he "now owns and occupies a fine farm of 400 cres, and as good a house as there is in the township. He is a general farmer, and deals in stock quite extensively. In politics he is a Republican, and was a true friend to the soldier of the late war.....Mr. Conner and wife are both members of the Christian Church, and are very highly esteemed by all who know them."
