Van Gundy Family Tree

Notes for John L VAN GUNDY says John was an architect but census records do not support that.

Residences & events:

7/14/1860 Ross Twp, Vermilion Co, IL. Having lost their parents, John took responsibility for his siblings. Listed in the census as a 30 year old farmer, he had property worth $1600/300. Wife J A was 28 and they had 7 year old son William. Living with them were siblings Maria, 11, and Jacob, 20.

6/23/1880 Harrisonville, Cass Co, MO. The census taker recorded "JV" at 50 years old, occupation of laborer. Wife Martha was 30 and 2 year old John was their only child. Brother William lived in the same township and in Austin Twp, was brother Jacob.

6/14/1900 Kirkpatrick St, Eldorado Springs, Cedar Co, MO. That year John was 70 years old with the occupation of day laborer. He had been married 7 years to 3rd wife, Pheby, 47, who had birthed 7 children but only 3 still survived. Living with them were his son John, 21, and step-daughter, Cecil Bright, 14.

4/19/1910 Same place. The census taker listed John as an 81 year old widower, a printer in a printing office. Son John L, 32, and his wife, Lena, 35, lived with him. All were born in MO.

1/6/1920 Still there. By that census time, John, 90, had retired and son John L, 41 was then head of the household with wife Jetta, 40. No one else was in the household.

Dr O A Schmidt from the hospital where John had been for the past 9 months, 4 days served as informant as well as physician. John's place of usual residence was Eldorado Springs, Cedar Co, MO. His birth date and place were verified as well as his father's name and place of birth. His mother's name was unknown but she was born in PA.

The cause of death was arteriosclerosis complicated by chronic nephritis.

The death certificate says he was to be buried in Springfield, MO but apparently descendants had other ideas. The cemetery is located 1 mile NE of Austin, MO. John's family were the only Gundys there except for an Emmett Gundy, born 11/24/1889, died 8/12/1901. If he was John's son, who was his mother?
