7/14/1860 Gonzales Co, TX. At age 26 (was actually 28), Wm was still living with his mother at census time. He did have property though which was valued at $200/500 and was a farmer.
From Civil War records:
"William C. Zumwalt was a private in Co 'C' Calvary of Waul's Legion, 1862 under Capt B F Weeks command. Waul's Legion was the only true legion-type organization from Texas to see service during the war and was wounded during the war.
William Christopher Zumwalt was married, a farmer with grey eyes, dark hair, red complexion, 5 ft 8 inches tall and enlisted on Mary 8, 1862."
