From Chronicles of Scotch-Irish in VA is the following:

Courses of a Patt Gran--Cocke, son and heir to Wm.--deceased, Chicheley Corbin Ga--Francis Thornton, Jr., and Wm.--dated 10br ye 20th, 1718. Beginning at a small marked White Oak standing by a great Swamp Side called Messapannox about 3 miles from ye Falls of Rappahannock River, it being ye most Northerly Corner of a great tract of land patented by Coll, Lawrence Smith and Mr. Robert Taliaferro, both deceased, and now in ye possession of Capt. Charles Smith and oyrs, from which beginning it extendeth along ye said Charles Smith's line South 73, crossing ye foresaid Swamp Nassapannox to 1 Red Oak leaving ye said land and dividing it from ye lands not yet surveyed.
