7/25/1860 Polk Twp near Beatyville, Adair Co, MO. That year the census taker recorded James at age 38, a day laborer with property worth $160/175. Louisa, listed as Polly, was 36, and their children were Sophia, 14, and James, 3 months. Polly's father lived in the same area.
8/6/1870 Paradise Twp, Coles Co, IL. By the next census the family had moved back home. James was a 46 year old farmer whose property was valued at $600/400. Living with him were wife Louisa, 40, James, 11, Millie, 4, and John, 2. In the same township were daughter Sophia and James Vandeventer.
6/1/1880 Same place. The census recorded James at age 56, a farmer, wife Luisa was 52 and they had 3 children: James, 21, Millie J, 14, and John W, 12.
6/8/1900 Mattoon, Coles Co, IL. By the next census James had moved to town and had a much younger wife. James was then 76, and even though they lived in town (avenue unreadable), his occupation was still farmer. Second wife Mary J was 47, had been married for 11 years to James, and had birthed 6 children, 5 of whiom still survied but only Goldie M, 6, lived with them. Son John and family were next door.
