He and Dollie had 8 children, two of which died young. The oldest son fought in the Civil War but caught the measles on the way home and died.

He homesteaded the place where Purvis now stands. When the railroad came through, he gave them the land for the right-of-way. The town was named for him and he encouraged people to settle there, sometimes giving them lots on which to build their homes.
