1830 Where was the family that year at census time? In Lawrence Co, IL where Jacob and Sarah were married, only William and James Elliott were there along with Thaddeus Morehouse. Were they living with one of the Elliotts? No ages in the Morehouse home fits their ages.
1840 Shelby Co, IL. Jacob's family at census time included: 2 males under age 5, 3 at 5-10, Jacob was 30-40, 2 females aged 10-15, and his wife, also 30-40.
10/8/1850 Richland Twp, Shelby Co, IL. Before the next census Jacob had lost his wife and two children.. Jacob, 47, was living with five children: Willis, 16, Thomas, 15, Thaddeus, 12, William, 10, and John, 8.
6/28/1860 PO Shelbyville, Holland Twp, Shelby Co, IL. The census found Jacob, 58, with a new wife, Milia, 47, and still at home were Thadeus, 22, Wm, 21, and Jno, 19, all farm laborers. Also living there was grandson Willis Manning, 3, and Sarah Powels, 16. John was a farmer with property worth $6800/1995.
6/20/1870 Same place. The census taker that year was into shortcutting and inaccurate reporting. He listed Jacob at 68, born SC, no occupation, his "Mrs" was 58. Living with them was Mammer W (?), 13 year old male (Willis Manning?). Next door was son William and down the road the other direction was Thardies (Thaddeus), 33.
6/15/1880 Still there. That year Jacob was recorded at 78, a farmer, Millie at 67 and grandson Albert Elliott, at 12. (Was he looking after the old folks or just couldn't stand the new step-mother?) Jacob lived a few doors away from sons Thaddeus and William on either side of them.
