PLANO, Ill. --- Joseph Franklin VanGundy Sr., 87, Plano, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at an Aurora, Ill., hospital.
Mr. VanGundy was a welder for the Geneva Construction Co. in Aurora, Ill. He was the general superintendent for 16 years before he retired. He and his son founded Waterman Construction Co. in 1968 in Waterman, Ill.
He was born June 26, 1914, in Neosho Rapids, Kan., the son of Ira Curtis and Susanna Erickson VanGundy.
Mr. VanGundy was a member of Trinity Church United Methodist in Yorkville, Ill.
He married Alverta Marie Lynn on July 16, 1934, in El Dorado, Kan. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Joseph VanGundy Jr., Plano; two daughters, Susanne Marie Baker, Plano, and Carol Lee Bivins, Big Rock, Ill.; a brother, Curtis H. VanGundy, Emporia, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Charter Funerals Emporia Chapel in Emporia, Kan. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Emporia. Mr. VanGundy will lie in state at the funeral chapel after 1 p.m. Sunday.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Church United Methodist Building Fund and sent in care of the funeral chapel.
