Notes for John STELTZ

Residences & events:

1849 John and cousin John Steltz, fleeing Germany to avoid the draft, arrived in America. (That is doubtful if John was only 9 years old in 1849.)

6/29/1860 Green Twp, PO Chillicothe, Ross Co, OH. John "Stelts," born Germany, was 19 years old at census time and was a blacksmith's apprentice. He lived with the family of the local blacksmith, Ferdinand Rose, with another blacksmith next door.

8/18/1870 Lower St Clair Twp, PO Buchanan, Allegheny Co, PA. The census taker recoded John "Stelts" as a 30 year old teamster with property worth $750/100, born Germany. Wife Sarah was 22, born OH, their 2 children were Mary, 3, and John, 1, both born in PA. Also living there was 15 year old domestic Neomi Schaffer, born PA.

6/1/1880 Hallsville, Colerain Twp, Ross Co, OH. It seems John had a whole new family and had moved by next census time. He was a 39 year old blacksmith, born OH, parents born VA and OH respectively. His wife was Rachel, 29, born OH, and children; Elizabeth, 13 (from the first marriage), Lilly, 4, Catherine, 3, and Carie, 1, all born in OH but parents were born PA and OH. (?)
