Residences & events in Nelson's life:

Champaign Co, IL. Nelson and John Jayne were among the first petitjurors of the county.

3/11/1837 Effingham Co, IL. Nelson bought 2 plots of land, 40.51acres at $1.25/acre totalling $50.64 and 39.55 acres for $49.44, alsoat $1.25. On the same day he also bought a third plot in Fayette Coof 80 acres for $100. His residence was still Champaign Co at thetime.

7/7/1838 Effingham Co, IL. Nelson bought land from John Jayne. Onthe same date he sold land to Dennis Stebbins.

11/7/1838 He bought SW 1/4 of NW 1/4 S36 T9N R3E from Thomas and MaryRaibon for $50.

1/1/1840 He sold 2 parcels of land to Henry Lorton for $700.

1840 Fayette Co, IL. Nelson is listed there in the census with anolder man and woman living with him, possibly Sarah's parents.

Marriage Note
The following was included in their marriage records:

"February the 15th 1832

This is to certify that Nelson Powell and Sally Jayne has agreed tomarry we thar fore cirtify that she is nineteen years of age and thatwe have giv our concent for them to marry.

hur step father---Henry Hanis

hur one monther--Gilley Hanis"

(The note and both signatures are the same hand writing.)

And another:

"State of Illinois, County of Vermilion

I, John Powell of said county do solemnly swear that my mother JaneVan Buskirk hath given her free and voluntary consent to the marriageof my brother Nelson Powell and Sarah Jayne and desired this deponentto make the same known to the clerk of the county commissioners courtof said county in order to obtain license for said marriage---and thisdeponent would on this oath further state that he was present and sawHenry Hannas and Gilley Hannas her mother sign a certificate of herage and consent to said marriage--which said certificate is this daydeposited in the clerks office--So help me God.

Death Note
Son, Moses, administrator of Nelson's estate, posted $500 bond withJames Milikin as security on 12/5/1846. Appraisers of the estate wereJonathan Corley, Joseph Morrison, and James Milikan. M. Powell,widow, was among the purchasers in the sale on 12/21/1846.

Expenses included:

11/23/1846 shrouding-$4.50

12/21/1847 coffin-$3.00

3/20/1848 state & county taxes-$3.67 and fee against theestate-$0.62 1/2

10/14/1851 sheriff's fee-$1.25

11/5/1851 probate justice of the peace-$7.87 1/2.

William Mears, the next door neighbor, was appointed guardian of hisminor children, Aaron, Sarah, and Elizabeth. His wife, Sarah, wasmentioned.
