Dewey was named for the heros of the day, two naval commanders in the Spanish American War which had ended exactly one month prior to his birth: Dewey, for George Dewey, commander of the US squadron which thoroughly defeated the Spanish fleet at Manilla, and Schley, in honor of Winfield Scott Schley, officer in charge at the battle of Santiago. Again quoting from Dorisgene Webb: "I wasn't around Uncle Dewey very much. Aunt Pauline really had my respect! In my youth, I was scared to death of her, she could make me quit crying in a second! In later years on the lake with her and Bill and June (Doris' siblings), I really appreciated her sense of humor. I have noticed the name Pauline is synonymous with laughter." (Doris refers to others in the family by that name who also see the funny side of life.) |
