1856 Cooks Mills, Coles Co, IL. According to family history recordedin the county history, the family arrived this year via "covered wagoncontaining all their worldly possessions and drawn by oxen. In theparty was Rachel's brother, Emanuel Floyd, and 2 of his aunts'families, both Crums."

1860 S Okaw Twp, Coles Co, IL. At census time, he had property =$600/300 but no occupation recorded. He and his wife had 2 smallchildren. Next door was brother-in-law, Manual Floyd and family.

1870 N Okaw Twp, Coles Co, IL. It is doubtful James moved but hisproperty had grown by census time, being recorded as $2400/450. Heand Rachel had 4 children.

According to a grandson, the family, having migrated from the south,were only mildly sympathetic to the Union cause in the Civil War.

Most of them were Democrats and predominately Baptist.
