He served from 6/4/1846 to 6/1847 with the rank of Pvt in the MexicanWar with Co I 2nd Rgmt, Ohio State Militia, Chilicothe, OH. There is an interesting story told in the 1883 History of FairfieldCo, OH, which may not apply to this man but since he married there andis the only one remotely associated with the county, it is added here.This story was told by Henry Leonard, of Liberty Twp: "More than sixty years ago Father Gundy, of that township, contractedforty head of fat hogs to Mr. Buckingham, of Zanesville, for onedollar and fifty cents per hundred, net weight, which, according tothe custom of the day, was to be found by deducting one-fifth of thegross. Gundy drove his hogs to Zanesville, a distance of forty miles,but Buckingham would not take them, saying that the market price wasonly one dollar and twenty-five cents. Gundy declined to sell hispork at any such figure, and turning away, walked back to his home inLiberty township, leaving the hogs to care for themselves. Withinthree weeks every hog of the forty was back on the Gundy farm. Almostthe entire distance traveled was a wilderness. Gundy afterwards gothis price, one dollar and fifty cents, at Chillicothe." |
