Residences & events:

1860 Sullivan, Moultrie Co, IL. He was a farmer with property = $800at census time. Living with him was his mother Susanna, 59, a CharlesBohana, 9, and Valentine Nett, 29, who was also a farmer with propertyof $1000/500, all from KY. Next door was James and Eveline Powell.

He served in Company M, of the 9th Illinois Calvary during the CivilWar.

The McPheeters family mentioned Huts in letters during the war:

Dated 11/8/1863, "Mr. Martin is going to have singing at the schoolhouse to night."

5/31/1865 Amid complaints of farming in a wet spring with poor wheatcrop results, "Some of Mathers not worth cutting, Sentels will losesome. Part of Hagermans is worthless. Cornwall has 60 acres newprarie that he wont get his seed off. Huts Martin not 1/2 a crop, andso on throughout this part of the county."

1870 Jonathan Creek Twp, Moultrie Co, IL. In the census, Huts was astill a farmer and his property had grown to $3600/1800.Sister-in-law, Charlotte Purvis, was visiting and his aged mother wasstill living with them. Charles Bohannan, 19, was also still there,now listed as farm hand. Next door was Levi Seass and 3 doors downthe other way was Joseph Purdy Powell.
