Pension papers said he had a dark complexion, brown hair, and hazeleyes. Residences & events: 3/1/1865 Moultrie Co, IL. He mustered to serve in the Civil War. 7/1865 Pine Bluff, AR. His pension application said he was treatedat the hospital from that date until discharge for an unnamed wholesystem problem which more particularly affected his legs, knees andshoulders. 12/16/1865 Pine Bluff, AR. He received an honorable discharge fromduty. 1870 Moultrie Co, IL was where the census taker found him and Elizawith 3 year old son, Lewis. James was a farm hand with property =$300. He could not read or wrtie. 1880 Liberty Twp, White Co, AR. Having moved by the next census time,James was a laborer. He and Eliza had 5 children at the time. 4/16/1890 Fort Smith, Sebastian Co, AR was his address when heapplied for an invalid pension based on his Civil War service statinghe was totally disabled and could not perform his duties as a farmer.Apparently he had learned to read and write as he signed his name. 1900 Ozark Twp, Polk Co, AR. By census time that year he wasremarried with a whole new family of 3 children plus a step-daughter. |
