Joseph was a Private in Capt James Howell's Co 7th Batl of Cumberland Co, PA, enlisting August, 1782, under Col James Purdy. This was the same regiment as Samuel McElvain, father of Andrew and Margaret. He was one of the early settlers of Franklin Co, OH, arriving before 1800. He lived in Clinton Twp along w/Samuel McElvain and John Hunter. He was one of the founding fathers of the 1st Presbyterian Church at Franklinton, OH. |

Joseph's will dated 3/1828, named executors: sons, William and Joseph, Jr. Witnesses were J.R. Swan, Freedom Seever, and Samuel Bigger. There was a codicil added on 12/10/1829 which was witnessed by J.R. Swan and Mease Smith. The will was probated 2/16/1835. |
