Her demise was recorded by neighbors, the McPheeters, in letters: "Mr. Hudson Martins little girl died last thursday morning. She was the same age of Julia (McPheeters). Her disease was congestion of the stomach. she only lay sick five days. Was a beautiful child and uncommon smart for one of her age. Her parents take her death very hard. Old Mrs Martin was not at home but they have since sent for her have gone to Mattoon to day after her. Little Zodie was interred in Purvises grave yard. I attended the burial which took place at four oclock on last thursday evening." |
