The census recorded him as afarmer with property = $11,800 and 4 children. 1880 At census time, both John and Eliza were 69 years old with a 14year old daughter, Elva, making Eliza an old mother at birth. Morethan likely she was their orphaned granddaughter whom they raised,daughter of Samuel. The 1880 Agricultural Census showed him as a wealthy man. The History of Franklin Co recorded: "He remained at home, at work upon the farm of his father, untiltwenty-three years of age, when he was married, on the anniversary ofhis birth.....After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Lisle remained on hisfather's farm, in Clinton, some seven or eight years, when theyremoved to Hamilton, and settled on the farm on which they now live." "Mr. Lisle has always been engaged in farming; has given strictattention to his chosen occupation; and has lived a quiet,unostentatious, but useful life. He has held various official trustsin the township, and for three years was director of the countyinfirmary." |
