Notes for Ambrose POWELL


From "The Lift of tithes wherin I am conftable for the year 1739:

Ambros Powel at materfon's home houfe Seven tithes

He was a surveyor and prominent citizen of Culpepper Co, VA. Heconfers distinction to the family by his outstanding career as apioneer. He accompanied Dr. Thomas Walker and 4 others in anexploration of Ky in 1750, starting on Mar 6th at 10 AM as recorded in
Dr. Walker's journal as well as the following statement by a nephew ofDaniel Boone, Daniel Bryan: "I will give you some account of DoctorThomas Walker, which I had from the mouth of Mr. William Tomerlin, whowas one of Walker's company.....Tomerlin, then a young man, agreed togo with him, also Ambrose Powell.....They started from low down inVirginia, traveled westwardly across Alleghany Mountains to Chissel'sLead Mine.....thence over Walden's Ridge and Powell's Mountain intoPowell's Valley. Powell's Mountain, Valley, and River took theirnames from this same Ambrose Powell."

There are several Ambrose Powells in the family and informationconcerning them has been intertwined until it is very hard to makesense of who did what. However, it has been said that this Ambrose'snamesake descendants also had distinctive careers including one whowas a judge of the County Court of Jackson Co, KY, and another whorepresented that county in the KY legislature. A great-grandson,General Ambrose Powell Hill was a noted officer of the ConfederateStates Army.

11/30/1749 Orange Co, VA. "Honorius Powel, 400 (acres), on top of theBlue Ridge, opposite Herrin's cabin, and 400 joining Ambrose Powell ontop the BlueRidge."

Augusta Co, VA. 20th May, 1783--John Offell received grant to beadministrator of Ambrose Powell estate.

His will never mentioned a wife or children, only siblings and theirchildren. From court records:

"31st March, 1779. Ambrose (mark) Powell's will--His rifle pin leftwith John Offill to be given to Jacob Gilasby, son of Jacob Gilasby.To all brothers and sisters, residuaries, except Sarah Haines and hertwo children. Stephen and Dicey Haines, who are to have an equal partwith
his brothers and sisters. Executor, Richard Bohannon. Teste: RobertGaines, John Offill, James Bohannon. Proved, 16th August, 1783. byGains and Buchnnan. Executors qualified.
