North Riding, Yorkshire, near Helmsley. Bryan was raised on the moorswhere at least 4 recorded generations of his forefathers had lived.

Mansfield, Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire. Shortly after his marriage hemoved to the small community at the edge of Sherwood Forest just northof Mansfield.

In the University of Nottingham among a Catalogue of Papers of HenryWalter of Houghton, relating to the estates of the Earls of Clare ofNottinghamshire is the following:

"NS 45 26 Mar 1690 Receipt of John, 4th Earl of Clare to Henry Shiptonof Yoxall, one bond due from Bryan Bowlby of Mansfield Woodhouse, andone Spanish piece of gold."
