Van Gundy Family Tree

Thomas Sr POWELL [Parents] was born in 1630/1640 in Sittingbourne Parrish, Essex Co, VA. He died on 20 Mar 1701 in Sittingbourne Parrish, Essex Co, VA. He married Mary PLACE about 1666 in Isle of Wight/Old Rappahannock Co, VA. He had other parents.

One story says it was this Thomas, along with brothers Robert and John and 26 others, who was imported to America 11/18/1663 by Capt Wm Mosley. Other theories place him in America much earlier, by at least 1654. He may have traveled back and forth between England and America.

Capt Mosley received 1157 acres of land located on the south side of the Rappahanock River in Sittingbourn Parish and also a patent for another 427.5 acres on 4/18/1670. He sold the latter parcel to Richard Poole, who the following July, through his attorney, George Jones, conveyed it to Thomas Powell for 2500 lbs of tobacco.

Residences & other events in his life:

1665 Old Rappahannock Co, VA. "John Mills sold to Thomas, both men being from Rappahanncok Co, 50 acres of land beginning at the marked hickory near the mill floodgates bounding on the land of Thomas Rooson, now possessed by Philip Saunders, to a creek called Tignor's Creek, unto a small river going into said creek being part of a grand patent to John Mills, for 400 pounds of tobacco and two cows."

8/11/1655 Lancaster Co, VA. Francis Place conveyed a tract of land formerly in Isle of Wight County, Virginia containing 300 acres patented by him September 7, 1654, lying
on the North side of the "freshes" of the Rappahanncok River about ten miles above Nazemum Town and certain cattle by deed of gift to 'My daughter Mary Place when she arrives at 18 years,' if she dies without heirs, then 'to daughter Margaret Place, my youngest daughter.'" Mary had married Thomas Powell by 1666 when they deeded this same land to James Coghill. (See next entry.)

9/30/1667 Old Rappahannock Co: "Thomas Powell and Mary, his wife, sell to James Coghill for the valluable consideration of nyne barrells of good Indian corne as also for Divers other Consideracons 300 acres on the North side of Rappahannock River patented September 7, 1654. Mary Powell, daughter to Francis Place, doth appoint her loving
friend, Mr. Daniel Gaines her true and lawful attorney to acknowledge
sd deed." William Wilton witnessed this power of attorney and a few days later bought the land from Coghill. This deed establishes the maiden name and father of Thomas Powell's wife Mary.

1694 Essex Co, VA "Thomas and Mary Powell convey to their son, Honorias Powell, 100 acres of land beginning at an ash standing 'in the line of Colonel Catlett (forest land)' on a branch adjoining Abraham Stepp."

1704 Isle of Wight Co, VA. Thomas supposedly still owned 100 acres according to "English Duplicates of Lost Virginia Records," even though he had been dead the past 3 years. A Seymon Powell owned the same amount of land.

Thomas' will, dated 3/10/1700, proved 4/10/1701 in Essex Co, VA, says he is "of Sittenburn Parish and very sick and weak." He leaves land to be divided equally between his sons, Place and Thomas and his wife, her part at her death to go to son William, cattle to son, William and "these persons that hath the education of my son William till he shall
come ot the age of 21 years." He also left bequests to daughters Frances Powell, Elizabeth Salmon, Anne Coffee, and sons, Honours (Honorias) and Place and son-in-law-John Salmon, to be Executors.

Abt 1703. Mary petitioned that the maintenance of her son, William, be allowed out of her husband's estate, but the court refused this as an "irregular process."

1705 Essex Co Order Book: William Powell had died and the executors of his father's estate unsuccessfully petitioned the court that his estate be appraised.

1706. John Warden as the greatest creditor, obtained administration of the estate of William Powell.

Mary PLACE [Parents] was born in 1648 in Lancaster Co, VA. She died about 15 Dec 1710 in Richmond Co, VA. She married Thomas Sr POWELL about 1666 in Isle of Wight/Old Rappahannock Co, VA.

She was already a landowner with cattle when she and Thomas married:

8/11/1655 Francis Place conveyed a tract of land formerly in Isle of Wight Co, VA, containing 300 acres patented by him 9/7/1654, lying on the North side of the "freshes" of the Rappahannock River about ten miles above Nazumum Town, and certain cattle by deed of gift to "My daughter Mary Place when she arrives at 18 years," if she dies without
heirs, then "to daughter Margaret Place, my youngest daughter."

Her birth date has been recorded twice in LDS files, in 1638 and 1648.

From the Richmond Co, VA, Order Book: Mary Powell, widow of Thomas, died about middle of December, 1710.

They had the following children:

M i Place POWELL was born about 1667. He died before 1715.
M ii Honorias Sr POWELL was born about 1669. He died in 1752.
M iii Frances POWELL was born in 1670/1675 in Essex Co, VA.
M iv Thomas Jr POWELL was born in 1675/1680. He died about 1739.
F v Anne POWELL was born in 1680/1684. She died in 1726.
  F vi Elizabeth POWELL.
M vii William POWELL was born in 1681/1685 in Isle of Wight/Essex Co, VA. He died in 1705 in Essex Co, VA.

William died unmarried.

Residences & events:

1704 Essex Co, VA. He was listed on the Quit Rent Rolls along with brothers, Thomas, Honor and Place, each with 72 acres of land.

William was not 21 in 1701 when his father died per father's will.

Following his death the executors of his father's estate unsuccessfully petitioned the court that William's estate be appraised. In 1706, John Warden, as greatest creditor, obtained administration of his estate. Since his mother had not yet died and passed any land to him, his estate must have consisted of only cattle.

He died unmarried.

Thomas Powell [Parents] was born about 1600 in Powelltor, Suffolk, England. He died on 9 Feb 1686/1687 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. He married Gody (Powell) about 1625.

Thomas was a frequent traveler between England and America before he finally decided to stay here for awhile, perhaps disposing of property at home first.

Residences & events in Thomas' life:

1618 VA. There were 2 passenger lists with Thomas Powell, both arriving in 1618. One said Thomas Powlett, age 40 was aboard the Samson, the other said Thomas Powell was on the Neptune. Whichever, he apparently returned to England within a short time.

1621 VA. Thomas arrived again, this time sailing on the Seafloure (Seaflower).

Hogg Island, VA. Thomas sailed in again, landing at this port, and among the passengers was a William Hitchcocke. The name of this ship was not specified.

Date and port unspecified for this arrival but accompanying him was Gody Powell, probably his wife. On this trip was a Thomas Hitchcocke.

1625 Hog Island, VA. It was probably this Thomas whose name appears in the Muster taken after the 1622 Massacre by Powhattan Indians of colonists, Gov Nathaniel Powell among them. There Thomas was listed as a servant of Capt Ralph Hamor then living at Hog Island and names the ship he came over in. Hog Island, lying across the river and settled about 1607-8, was close enough to Jamestown for colonists to use signal fires as a means of communication.

6/10/1637 Upper Norfolk Co, VA. Thomas patented 100 acres on the south side of the Nansemond River "50a. for his own and 50a. for the personal adv(enture) of a servt." On the same day he patented another 200 acres "1 mi. from plantation of sd Powell," which infers he had already settled there. This was about 40 miles from the previous address, settlements around the Nansemond River being later than those closer to Jamestown.

1640 John Geary patented 200 acres in the same county "between land late in possession of Mr. Thomas Dew and by him assigned to Thomas Davis, and land now in the possession of Thomas Powell."

1657 Nansemond Co, VA. Francis Hutchins patented 200 acres at the head of Beaver Dam Creek, being a branch of the west branch of Nansemond River, beginning at mile's end of William Storie's land and adjoining the land of Mr. John Garrett and Thomas Powell.

1680 Thomas gave his son, William, "the tract of land on Beaver Dan whereon he lived."

1686 Isle of Wight Co, VA. Francis Hutchins and wife, Mary, of the lower Parish, conveyed 100 acres of land, which by change of county lines now lay in Isle of Wight, to Thomas English, described as lying on the Western Branch adjoining Thomas Gale and Thomas Powell.

His will was dated 7/12/1683 and recorded 2/9/1687. In it he named legatees: Sons, Thomas, Nathaniel, William, John; daughters-in-law, Elizabeth Powell and Lucretia Corbett; Lucinda, Elizabeth, and Roberta; with son, William, and his wife, Elizabeth as executors. There was no mention of Thomas' wife so apparently she predeceased
him.

Half of Thomas' land was bequeathed to Thomas, Nathaniel, William, and John with the stipulation that they not sell it except to each other. The other half of the land went to son, William. From this some have concluded the first 4 named were actually grandsons, children of deceased son, Nathaniel, rather than his own children. I prefer to believe they were sons as stated.

Gody (Powell).Gody married Thomas Powell about 1625.

They had the following children:

  M i Nathaniel Powell died in 1677/1678.
M ii William POWELL was born in 1620/1630. He died about 1696.
