Henry was a brother to Daniel Crum, husband of Mary Daily (brothers married sisters).

Martha Jane McGUIRE [Parents] was born on 16 Feb 1828 in Scott Co, IN. She died on 21 Jun 1906 in Cooks Mills, Coles Co, IL. She was buried in Pleasant Grove Cem, Cooks Mills, Coles Co, IL. She married Henry Thompson CRUM on 16 Apr 1844 in Scott Co, NC.

John's will indicated Martha was the daughter of Nancy but her name was McGuire on marriage records.

Miles WHITLEY [Parents] was born on 6 Jul 1792 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. He died in Apr 1864 in Caldwell Co, TX. He married Elizabeth Little on 17 Feb 1814 in Madison Co, IL.

11/4/1817 Bond Co, IL, was his residence when he purchased 160 acres at a Federal sale, paying $2.00/acre for land located at S24 T04N R02W.

1820 Bond Co, IL, was still his residence at census time. His household included 2 males under 21, himself, over 21, and 2 females. Neighbors were his father and 3 brothers along with his inlaws.

3/1/1823 Edgar Co, IL, was recorded as his address on this date when he paid $1.25/acre for 80 acres at S25 T14N R12W, also in Edgar Co.

4/11/1823 He added another 80 acre tract at S24 T14N R12W to his asset inventory, again at Federal sale for $1.25/acre.

1827 Shelby Co, IL. He was a member of the first grand jury.

1830 Shelby Co, IL. At census time he was living next door to brother, Sharp, just down the road from the rest of the Whitleys. In his household were 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 2 males 10-15, himself at 30-40, 1 female15-20, and 1 female 30-40.

He sold his homestead rights to a Samuel M Smysor who took out a patent in 1831.

1/21/1834 Coles Co, IL. He had already moved to Coles Co when he bought 80 acres at another Federal sale, paying $1.25/acre. This piece of land was located at S20 T13N R07E.

7/21/1836 At S19 T13N R07E was the next Federal sale purchase he made, buying 40 acres for the same price as before.

2/21/1837 Still amassing land, he purchased another 80 acres which was located at S29 T13N R07E, again from a Federal sale and for the same price.

1850 Walker Co, TX. The exact date of his arrival there is unknown. Some relatives say he arrived in 1835 with Vehlein's Colony but notes above dispute that. At census time, only the 3 youngest children as teenagers were left at home and next door was son, John, and family.

1860 Caldwell Co, TX, was his residence at the time of his death.

His birth date is 9/6/1792 in LDS records and some other family listings.

Some family listings have 1860 as his death date.

Elizabeth Little was born in 1792 in NC. She died before 1860 in TX. She married Miles WHITLEY on 17 Feb 1814 in Madison Co, IL.

They had the following children:

His family's residence was still in IL at the time of his birth so either his birthplace is wrong or his parents went down for a visit and he was born while there.

John Saunders Jr WHITLEY [Parents] was born on 25 Dec 1793 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. He died in St Clair Co, MO. He married Margaret (WHITLEY) before 1826.

John was a veteran of the War of 1812.

1820 Bond Co, IL. Living at his house at census time were himself, over age 21, and 3 females. His parents and 3 brothers were neighbors.

1826 Fayette Co, IL. He arrived with the rest of the family.

1/23/1827 Shelby Co, IL. The family never actually moved, rather a new county was formed and the lines shifted.

1830 Shelby Co, IL. At census time John was living next door to his parents with several brothers just down the road. John, at age 20-30, had in his household 2 females under 5, 2 females 10-15, and his wife, in the same age range as himself.

Coles Co,IL. He had 2 or 3 minor children when they moved.

7/21/1836 He bought a 40 acre plot located at S28 T13N R07E at a Federal sale for $1.25/acre.

11/16/1836 Adding to his estate, he purchased another 80 acres at S21 T13 R07E, again at Federal sale for $1.25/acre.

2/22/1837 Another 40 acres was received from a Federal sale for the same price as before. This property was located at S21 T13N R07E.

2/16/1839 He, as co-borrower along with John G Purvis, owed his father's estate a note of $125.75. Suit was brought by brother, Elisha, as administrator of the estate, but he "was not found," apparently having already moved west, leaving John Purvis holding the bag to satisfy the judgment. Purvis paid his half and the rest was dropped.

1840 St Clair Co, MO.

Margaret (WHITLEY) was born in 1790 in VA. She died in 1842 in MO. She married John Saunders Jr WHITLEY before 1826.

They had the following children:

Samuel Washington LINDLEY was born in 1788 in Anderson Co, SC. He died about 1859 in Shepherd Hill, Montgomery Co, TX. He married Elizabeth WHITLEY about 1810.

Christian Co, KY where he married Polly. Following her death he was named in her stead in the will of her father.

IL. The exact date of the family's arrival is unknown but they moved with the Whitley clan.

11/25/1812 Samuel served in the War of 1812 under Capt Amos Squire.

4/7/1817 Bond Co, IL, was recorded as his residence when he purchased 158.63 acres in Clinton Co, for $2.00/acre at a Federal sale. Brother-in-law, Miles Whitley, was in the same county at that time.

1828 Moultrie Co, IL. Supposedly the first church services held in the county were held in Samuel's cabin that year by Rev. Hart, a Methodist. There is no evidence Samuel ever owned any property in Moultrie or in Shelby Co.

No land entries have been found for Samuel but a county history said one "important thing he did was to go down to what is now known as the Whitfield farm with his ox teams and break out some prairie land for the Waggoners" (the second family to arrive in the county behind the Whitleys.)

1830 Clark Co, IL. He was a neighbor of brother-in-law, Randolph Whitley, at census time.

1834 Montgomery Co, TX where he was listed in land records. Apparently he and several of the Whitley family moved together again. Court records verify that all of Samuel's children were born to Elizabeth Whitley except the first and last.

1835 Danville, TX.

Some family records say he died in 1854 in Washington Co, TX.

Elizabeth WHITLEY [Parents] was born in 1795 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. She died in 1838 in TX. She married Samuel Washington LINDLEY about 1810.

It's a possibility that Elizabeth Whitley and Mary Elizabeth Hall are one and the same person. Elizabeth may have been previously married.

Randolph WHITLEY [Parents] was born on 16 Jan 1798 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. He died on 20 Nov 1867. He married Judy Duncan on 25 Mar 1819 in Bond Co, IL.

1820 Bond Co, IL. He was listed in the census with 2 males under 21, himself, above 21 and 2 females. In the same census were his father, 3 brothers, and several Duncan in-laws..

Fall, 1826 The family arrived in IL. He and his sons followed the family tradition of being horse racers and fighters.

Shelby Co, IL. He was one of the first County Commissioners as well as Justice of the Peace.

1830 Clark Co, IL. At census time he and brother-in-law, Samuel Lindley, were counted there as neighbors.

1/1/1834 Coles Co, IL, was his current residence when he purchased 2-80 acre pieces of land at a Federal Sale for $1.25/acre. One plot was located at S29 T13N R07E, the other at S20 T13N R07E. Most of his sons had moved west before he came to Coles.

Bef 1840 St Clair, MO. He was not listed in the IL census that year.

Local records have his birth place as TN.

Judy Duncan.Judy married Randolph WHITLEY on 25 Mar 1819 in Bond Co, IL.

Some researcher say Judy was the sister of Celia....i.e. sisters married brothers.


Sharp WHITLEY [Parents] was born on 8 Aug 1802 in White Co, TN. He died in Jul 1857 in Lavaca Co, TX. He married Sarah "Salley" Little on 29 Dec 1821 in Fayette Co, IL.

1826 Shelby Co, IL. The date the entire family arrived according to the county history but actually Shelby Co was formed out of Fayette, so they may not have moved at all.

He served on the first petit jury of the new county.

1830 Shelby Co, IL. He was living next door to brother, Miles, at census time and down the road were other brothers and their parents. Sharp's family consisted of 1 male under 5, himself at 20-30, 1 female under 5, and his wife at 20-30.

He, brother, William, and their father each entered the 80 acre tracts on which they settled when the first land patents were issued.

5/27/1831 Shelby Co, IL, was still his residence when he purchased 80 acres in Moultrie Co at S9 T12N R06E, paying $1.25/acre at Federal sale.

1/1/1834 Coles Co, IL. He had already moved by the time he bought more land from a Federal sale in Coles Co. For the same purchase price as before, he received 80 acres at S34 T14N R07E.

Abt 1836 TX. He probably moved about the same time as, or possibly with, several other family members.

Local and family records say he was born in White Co, TN, and LDS say Isle of Wight, VA.

Sarah "Salley" Little was born about 1807. She married Sharp WHITLEY on 29 Dec 1821 in Fayette Co, IL.

They had the following children:

  M ii John Madison WHITLEY.

William WHITLEY [Parents] was born in Apr 1806 in White Co, TN. He died on 17 Jul 1860 in St Clair Co, MO. He married Celia "Sally" Duncan on 18 Sep 1828 in Shelby Co, IL, by Shelton Allphus, Esq.

Residences & events:

1826 Shelby Co, IL. He arrived with the rest of the family, according to the local history.

1830 He was counted at census time as a neighbor to his father and brother, John Jr. He was 20-30 yrs old, as was his wife, and had a daughter under 5.

When the first land patents were issued, he and brother, Sharp, along with their father each entered the 80 acre tracts on which they settled.

1/21/1834 Coles Co, IL. He was already a resident of the county when he purchased 80 acres at a Federal sale for $1.25/acre. The land was located at S20 T13N R07E.

7/21/1836 He bought more land, again at a Federal sale for the same price. It was situated at S19 T13N R07E.

2/21/1837 Adding to his investments, he bought another 80 acres at S29 R13N R07E for the same price at another Federal sale.

Bef 1840 St Clair, MO. He was not in IL by census time.

Celia "Sally" Duncan was born after 1811. She married William WHITLEY on 18 Sep 1828 in Shelby Co, IL, by Shelton Allphus, Esq.

She may have been the sister of Judy Duncan.

Some descendants say she was born in 1810 but she was not of age at the time of her marriage as evidenced by her guardian giving permission.

William Price was born in 1790/1800. He married Clerrinda Nancy WHITLEY on 31 Jan 1831 in Shelby Co, IL.

Shelby Co, IL. The Price family were among the early settlers of the county, probably arriving with the Whitleys.

1830 Shelby Co, IL. The census taker recorded William's age as 30-40 and there were living at his house 2 males under 5, 1 female also 30-40, 2 females under 5, and 1 female 5-10. Apparently this wife died soon after as he married Clerinda a few months later.

1840 Coles Co, IL. If this was the same William Price, he was 40-50 years old and his family consisted of 1 male under 5, 1 male 15-20, 1 female 20-30, and 1 female 15-20.

Clerrinda Nancy WHITLEY [Parents] was born on 3 Mar 1815 in Bond Co, IL. She married William Price on 31 Jan 1831 in Shelby Co, IL.

There is a Clerinda Price buried in Janesville Cemetery, Janesville, Cumberland Co, IL but she died 7/13/1949 and could be the granddaughter of this Clerinda. In the same cemetery is a William Price 1872-1959, possibly a grandson.

The whereabouts of this Clerinda and William is unknown. If she married Mr. Tull as records indicate, she could be buried with him.
