There is a Clerinda Price buried in Janesville Cemetery, Janesville, Cumberland Co, IL but she died 7/13/1949 and could be the granddaughter of this Clerinda. In the same cemetery is a William Price 1872-1959, possibly a grandson.

The whereabouts of this Clerinda and William is unknown. If she married Mr. Tull as records indicate, she could be buried with him.


John WHITLEY [Parents] was born in 1817. He died about 1889 in Walker Co, TX. He married Mary E (Whitley) about 1839.

Residences & events:

Walker Co, TX. The deed book recorded him as a" colonist by the Republic of Texas."

1850 Walker Co, TX. At census time his family consisted of 5 children and they lived next door to his parents. Living with them were 2 "hirelings," John Knight 17, and Nancy, 22.

A deed dated 7/30/1889 conveyed land from his widow and 2 children to daughter Lizzie:

"Know all men by these presents, that we Mary Whitley, widow of John Whitley, decd, F.M., a son of said John Whitley decd. and Nancy Jane Richards, a daughter of the said decd, joined by her husband, J.P. Richards, having mutually agreed upon the partition of the unsold land within the 1/3 league of land granted to the said John Whitley decd, as a colonist by the Republic of Texas, situated in the County of Walker, State of Texas for and in consideration of the premises above stated have granted, sold and conveyed, and by these presents do grant, sell and convey, unto Lizzie G. Lee a daughter of the said John Whitley decd. and intermarried with Lewis M. Lee of the County of Walker and State of Texas, all that certain tract or parcel of land situated in Walker County, Texas and a part of the said John Whitley, one third league of land...."

The deed continues with a location description and that it consisted of 208 acres.

Mary E (Whitley) was born in 1812 in GA. She married John WHITLEY about 1839.

In the 1880 census, she was listed as a widow and living with the Lee family, her daughter, Elizabeth.

In the 1850 census, her age was 38 making her birth year 1812. In 1880 it was 56, making it 1824. Which is correct?

They had the following children:

  F ii Elizabeth Gertrude "Lizzie" WHITLEY was born on 12 May 1843. She died on 24 Aug 1900.
  M iii Solomon WHITLEY was born in 1855. He died before 1889.

He was not mentioned in a deed transfer between his mother and 2 other siblings.
  M iv Fredrick M WHITLEY was born in 1847.
  M v Isaiah WHITLEY was born in 1849. He died before 1889.

He was not mentioned in a deed transfer in the estate settlement of his father.

Samuel Washington LINDLEY was born in 1788 in Anderson Co, SC. He died about 1859 in Shepherd Hill, Montgomery Co, TX. He married Mary "Polly" Hall on 5 Jun 1809 in Christian Co, KY.

11/25/1812 Samuel served in the War of 1812 under Capt Amos Squire.

4/7/1817 Bond Co, IL, was recorded as his residence when he purchased 158.63 acres in Clinton Co, for $2.00/acre at a Federal sale. Brother-in-law, Miles Whitley, was in the same county at that time.

1828 Moultrie Co, IL. Supposedly the first church services held in the county were held in Samuel's cabin that year by Rev. Hart, a Methodist. There is no evidence Samuel ever owned any property in Moultrie or in Shelby Co.

No land entries have been found for Samuel but a county history said one "important thing he did was to go down to what is now known as the Whitfield farm with his ox teams and break out some prairie land for the Waggoners" (the second family to arrive in the county behind the Whitleys.)

1830 Clark Co, IL. He was a neighbor of brother-in-law, Randolph Whitley, at census time.

1834 Montgomery Co, TX where he was listed in land records. Apparently he and several of the Whitley family moved together again. Court records verify that all of Samuel's children were born to Elizabeth Whitley except the first and last.

1835 Danville, TX.

Some family records say he died in 1854 in Washington Co, TX.

Mary "Polly" Hall was born about 1790. She died in 1810. She married Samuel Washington LINDLEY on 5 Jun 1809 in Christian Co, KY.

Some relatives say her name was Mary Elizabeth but Lindley descendants declare it was only Mary "Polly"

She died in childbirth of her first child.
